Heaven, Hell, and the Afterlife

In Everafter: Heaven, Hell, and the Afterlife, we took a look at some of the thoughts that dominate our culture’s view of the afterlife, as well as the thoughts that dominate the thinking of modern American Christians. We compared those ideas to the ideas presented in Scripture, looking for what we can say with absolute clarity, and what we must leave to individual interpretation. We invite you to listen to these six sermons or, if you prefer, download the printed versions.

Eternal Punishment—Eternal Reward

The Bible teaches that human life, while beginning at one point in time, will last forever. As such, punishment and reward will also last forever, as described in multiple passages. We will not only look at biblical evidence for this teaching, but also consider the impact it should have on how we live.

Sola Gratia

The Reformation gave us phrases like Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) and Sola Gratia (grace alone). This final message in our series considers the controversial claim that salvation is found in no one else other than Jesus Christ. We’ll not only look at the Scriptural basis for this claim, but the implications it has for how we live our lives.

Hell

What is Hell really like? Are there literal flames? Does it really last forever? This morning we’ll explore what the Bible has to say about Hell and what we should take away from its descriptions.

Heaven

Is there any more to Heaven that streets of gold and worship services that last forever? This morning we’ll consider what might fill our time in eternity, as well as how Heaven will be a return to Eden.

God's Absolute Standard

The Bible teaches that eternal reward and punishment will be assigned to humans based on God’s unchanging, absolute standard. We’ll look at how the Bible defines that standard and how that conflicts with modern sensibilities. We will also briefly consider what that says about the justice of God.

Everafter

We’ll kick off the Everafter series by looking at some of the thoughts that dominate our culture’s view of the afterlife, as well as the thoughts that dominate the thinking of modern American Christians. We will compare those ideas to the ideas presented in Scripture, looking for what we can say with absolute clarity, and what we must leave to individual interpretation. You won’t want to miss this very stimulating and important series.
